Hazardous industrial waste: consignment notes, records and registration
Updated
Hazardous industrial waste, such as oils, solvents and asbestos, moves under a consignment note every time it leaves the site, and the producer keeps those notes for at least 3 years. In Wales a producer of more than 500kg of hazardous waste a year also registers with Natural Resources Wales, and the registration lasts one year.
Consignment notes
Every movement of hazardous waste is recorded on a consignment note; the consignee keeps its own records too (gov.uk, hazardous waste). The duty of care code of practice sets three years for a producer's hazardous waste consignment notes (duty of care code of practice).
Registering in Wales
"If you produce or store over 500kg of hazardous waste per year, then you need to register with us" every 12 months, and registrations last for one year (Natural Resources Wales).
Who can take it
A general waste round will not take hazardous waste. Ask for a carrier with a hazardous waste permit and check its registration on the public register before the first collection.
